Where to launch a kayak in Nags Head

There is one straightforward answer and one address trap sitting behind it, and the trap catches people every single week of the summer. The answer is the state park's soundside frontage. The trap is that the park has two addresses, the famous one is the wrong one for a boat, and the search result you are most likely to tap sends you to a dune parking lot with no water access at all.

Here is the distinction in one line, taken straight off the park's own facilities listing: Jockey's Ridge Soundside Access: 330 W. Soundside Road, Nags Head — separate from the main visitor centre at 300 W. Carolista Drive. Both are Jockey's Ridge State Park. Only one of them puts you on Roanoke Sound. Type the Soundside Road address in full, not the park name, and do not let the map app helpfully correct you to the landmark.

What you get when you arrive is the gentlest paddling water on this stretch of the island. It is state-owned frontage, so nobody is going to ask you what you are doing there; the bottom stays shallow a long way out; and the ocean swell that makes the east side of the island a committed launch simply does not exist on this side. For a first-timer, a nervous adult, or a family with children who have never been in a boat, this is as forgiving as coastal paddling gets on the Outer Banks.

Timing is the thing to plan around, and the local rhythm is unusually consistent. Mornings are calm; afternoons build. The sound is shallow enough that wind turns it choppy quickly and then lays it flat again just as quickly, so a pre-breakfast launch and a mid-afternoon launch on the same day can feel like two different bodies of water. If your party includes anyone who is going to be uncomfortable in chop, go early and be off the water by lunch.

One access note that is easy to miss and genuinely useful if your group includes somebody with limited mobility: the town runs a referral programme for free beach wheelchairs from Nags Head Fire Rescue, 252.441.5909, year-round and reservation-based, and the town's own listing points visitors at local equipment rental companies for the same equipment. That is the town saying out loud that getting onto sand here is a solved problem if you ask in advance. Ask in advance.

Finally, a word about the rest of Nags Head. People ask us for a list of five launches in town and we do not have one, because the primary sources do not publish one. Across 110 miles of Dare County shoreline there are dozens of places where a boat gets put in the water, and plenty of them are perfectly legal — but the Soundside Access is the one with a state agency, a posted address, and a parking lot behind it. For a rental boat that you did not buy and would rather not have towed, that combination is worth driving past a closer patch of sand for.
